About

The Ulster Chess Union is passionate about the development and promotion of children's chess locally. This website was created to promote and report on the many excellent junior chess events we run every year. All our events are organised by volunteers and run on a non-profit basis.

Mark Newman   -   UCU Secretary and Schools Development Officer

Mark has been a tireless worker for children's chess over many years. He organises the hugely popular children's chess event at Methody every month, which culminates in a fantastic day out at Stormont at the end of the year. He also runs the chess summer school.

Damien Cunningham   -   UCU President

Damien runs a children's chess night at Ballynafeigh Chess Club which caters for kids from 4 years old upwards. This provides an opportunity for children to play non-competitive games and receive informal coaching. He also provides coaching days at various schools including Ballymena Academy and St Malachy's.

Ross Harris   -   UCU Tournament Director

Ross runs the UCU Centre of Excellence Coaching Programme at Strandtown Primary School. Here children learn chess through a structured curriculum and have the chance to partake in a variety of club competitions including a knockout cup and a club ladder.

Brendan Jamison   -   UCU Board Member

Brendan helps run the children's chess night at Ballynafeigh Chess Club and is part of the fantastic coaching team at the club. He also does a lot of the creative and design work for the Ulster Chess Union, including the creation of our fantastic new logo for children's chess!
