Chess Clubs

If you are new to chess and are looking to learn more about this fantastic game there are a number of great options locally.

Children's Monthly Chess Events

These are run once a month at Methodist College Belfast and are great for players of all abilities. Playing strength ranges from absolute beginner to children that are strong enough to play in adult tournaments and leagues. The players are split into Primary and Secondary School sections. The day consists of a tournament (usually of about 6 games), a puzzle solving competition, and some informal coaching. Details of these fun events can be found on our Tournaments page and all young chess players are welcome! Contact Mark Newman - secretary@ulsterchess.org

Ballynafeigh Chess Club Children's Night

All games are non-competitive and some informal coaching is given on the night. The adult players don't arrive at the club until 8.00pm, at which stage the junior players can either leave for home or stay to challenge a more experienced player! Children of all abilities are very welcome at the club. Contact Damien Cunningham - damien_cunningham@hotmail.com

Strandtown Chess Academy

The Ulster Chess Union runs a Centre of Excellence out of Strandtown Primary School. At present this is only open to members of the school, however, we are hoping to make this available to all young players in the very near future. At the academy the children are taught through a structured curriculum starting from absolute beginners and progressing on to become strong club players.
